Visiting Clinical Fellowship

Prospective Overview

Scholars in this customized program participate in a variety of activities based on their personal educational objectives.  We work with each scholar to identify their personal training objectives ranging from enhancing clinical skills and knowledge to enhancing scientific communication skills to developing skills and knowledge to answer pressing research questions relevant to their clinical practice.  Scholars in this program are matched with faculty mentors who are uniquely qualified to provide the training.  Scholars work in UC San Diego clinical settings and may attend carefully selected educational activities.  Detailed training logs are maintained to document progress.

Prospective Candidates

UC San Diego Health Sciences International offers Visiting Clinical Fellowships that are specifically tailored for individuals who are Board-certified or Board-eligible (by the Saudi Commission, for example) in their home country (outside of the United States).

English Language Proficiency

All international applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If the applicant's native language is not English, we require one of the two English proficiency exams listed below.

  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 85
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6

Program Goals

  • To expand knowledge of the health care system in the US and how it operates.

  • To provide direct experience in comprehensive & standardized patient care scenarios including policies & procedures as well as professional communication standards.

  • To provide the opportunity for clinical skills enhancement.

  • To facilitate the development of relationships with faculty mentors for successful career development.

Duration of Program

This is a 1 year program with the option to extend.

COVID-19 Updates

HSI strongly encourages prospective scholars to obtain their COVID-19 vaccination(s) in their home country, where they are licensed physicians and can likely secure their vaccinations in a timelier manner. Obtaining the vaccination ahead of any international travel is ideal, to ensure health and safety before arriving in San Diego.
